# നയ്റോബി

കെനിയയുടെ തലസ്ഥാനമാണ് നയ്റോബി. കെനിയയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ നഗരവും ഇത് തന്നെ. "തണുത്ത ജലത്തിന്റെ പ്രദേശം" എന്നർത്ഥമുള്ള മാസായി ഭാഷയിലെ "എങ്കാരെ ന്യിറോബി" എന്നതിൽ നിന്നാണ് നയ്റോബി എന്ന പേരുണ്ടായത്. [^1]

1899ലാണ് നയ്റോബി സ്ഥാപിതമായത്. 1905ൽ കെനിയൗടെ തലസ്ഥാനം എന്ന പദവി മൊസാംബയിൽ നിന്ന് നയ്റോബിക്ക് ലഭിച്ചു.[^2] നയ്റോബി പ്രവിശ്യ, നയ്റോബി ജില്ല എന്നിവയുടേയും തലസ്ഥാമാണ് ഈ നഗരം. രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ തെക്ക് ഭാഗത്തായി നയ്റോബി നദിയുടെ കരയിൽ സമുദ്ര നിരപ്പിൽ നിന്ന് 1661 മീറ്റർ (5450 അടി) ഉയരത്തിലാണ് നഗരം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്.[^3]

കിഴക്കൻ ആഫ്രിക്കയിലെ ഏറ്റവും ജനസംഖ്യയേറിയ നഗരമാണ് നയ്റോബി. 30 ലക്ഷത്തിനും 49 ലക്ഷത്തിനും ഇടയിലാണ് ഇവിടുത്തെ ജനസംഖ്യ. 1999ലെ സെൻസസ് അനുസരിച്ച് 684 km² വിസ്തീർണമുള്ള നയ്റോബിയുടെ ഭരണ പ്രദേശത്ത് 2,143,254 ജനങ്ങൾ വസിക്കുന്നു.[^4] ഇപ്പോൾ ആഫ്രിക്കയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ നാലാമത്തെ നഗരമാണ് നയ്റോബി.
