# नैरोबी

नैरोबी (Nairobi) ही पूर्व आफ्रिकेच्या केन्या देशाची राजधानी व सगळ्यात मोठे शहर आहे. नैरोबी हे नाव मासाई भाषेतील एंकारे न्यिरोबी (गार पाण्याचे ठिकाण) या शब्दांवरून आले आहे.नैरोबीला उन्हातील हिरवे शहरही म्हणतात.[^1] नैरोबी शहर केन्याच्या दक्षिण भागात नैरोबी नदीच्या काठावर वसले आहे. २००९ साली येथील लोकसंख्या सुमारे ३३.७५ लाख होती. सध्या नैरोबी हे आफ्रिका खंडामधील १४व्या क्रमांकाचे मोठे शहर आहे.

नैरोबीची स्थापना ब्रिटिशांनी इ.स. १८९९ मध्ये मोम्बासा ते युगांडा दरम्यानच्या रेल्वे मार्गावरील एक वखार म्हणून केली होती. नैरोबी शहर झपाट्याने वाढले व इ.स. १९०७ साली ब्रिटिश पूर्व आफ्रिका संस्थानाचे राजधानीचे शहर झाले. इ.स. १९५३ साली केन्याला स्वातंत्र्य मिळाल्यानंतर नैरोबी केन्याची राजधानी झाली.

आफ्रिकेमधील राजकीय व आर्थिक दृष्ट्या सर्वात महत्त्वाच्या शहरांपैकी एक असलेल्या नैरोबीमध्ये संयुक्त राष्ट्रांच्या चार प्रमुख कार्यालयांपैकी एक कार्यालय स्थित आहे (इतर तीन कार्यालये न्यू यॉर्क शहर, जिनिव्हा व व्हियेना येथे आहेत). तसेच संयुक्त राष्ट्रे पर्यावरण कार्यक्रमाचे मुख्यालय देखील नैरोबीमध्येच आहे.

केन्या एअरवेजचा मुख्य वाहतूकतळ असलेला जोमो केन्याटा आंतरराष्ट्रीय विमानतळ येथेच स्थित आहे.
