# నైరోబి

నైరోబి కెన్యా దేశపు రాజధాని, అతిపెద్ద నగరం. ఈ నగరంలో ప్రవహించే నైరోబి నదిని ఉద్దేశించిన ఎంకరే నైరోబీ అనే పదబంధం నుంచి ఈ నగరానికా పేరు వచ్చింది. కెన్యా ప్రాంతీయ భాష మాసాయ్ లో ఎంకరే నైరోబీ అంటే చల్లని నీళ్ళు అని అర్థం. 2019 జనాభా లెక్కల ప్రకారం నగరం జనాభా 4,397,073. మెట్రోపాలిటన్ ఏరియాను కూడా కలుపుకుంటే  9,354,580. ఈ నగరాన్ని గ్రీన్ సిటీ ఇన్ ద సన్ అని వ్యవహరిస్తారు.[^1]

నైరోబిని 1899 లో వలసరాజ్యాల అధికారులు బ్రిటిష్ ఈస్ట్ ఆఫ్రికాలో ఉగాండా రైల్వేలో డిపోగా స్థాపించారు.[^2] ఈ నగరం వెంటనే పెద్దదిగా విస్తరించి 1907 లో అంతకు మునుపు కెన్యా రాజధాని యైన మొంబాసా నగరం స్థానాన్ని ఆక్రమించింది. 1963 లో కెన్యా స్వాతంత్ర్యం అనంతరం రిపబ్లిక్ ఆఫ్ కెన్యాకు రాజధానిగా మారింది.[^3]
వలస పరిపాలనలో నైరోబి, కాఫీ, టీ తోటల పెంపకంలో ప్రసిద్ధి గాంచింది.[^4][^5] ఈ నగరం కెన్యా దక్షిణ మధ్యభాగంలో సముద్రమట్టానికి 1795 మీటర్ల ఎత్తులో ఉంది.[^6]
